Meet the Kelleys
Wes, Robin, Ty, and Grey Kelley often spend their weekends riding dirt bikes. Wes rides a Honda CRF 250X, Robin rides a Honda CRF 100F, Ty rides a CRF 70F, and Grey is on a CRF 50F. Their favorite places to ride is Prentice Cooper State Park, their family farm in Pikeville and numerous other public riding areas throughout our region.
Wes bought a 1979 XR250 at the age of 15. He has lost count of the number of bikes he has owned over the years everything from Harleys to Hondas. He said that, “street bikes are great, but dirt bikes are my favorite.” Robin started riding a Honda scooter at the age of 16. She could often be seen cruising the streets of Hixson. “I was the only girl in the neighborhood with one. It was awesome.” When they first met, Robin thought he was crazy riding in the woods, but after a few rides she had to get a bike of her own. This started a weekend tradition they both enjoy, THEN CAME THE KIDS!
With such cool motorcycle parents Ty could not grow fast enough. He got his first bike from Santa at the age of 2 (it did sit for a while). Robin was reluctant to see her baby boy take off for the first time, but was reassured when she saw all the safety equipment available for kids these days. “The proper riding apparel is definitely a must for enjoying a great sport,” Wes says. “In my opinion, with the proper supervision and equipment, motorcycling can be as safe as any sport.” Another key Wes feels is “knowing your child’s riding abilities, which comes with close supervision.” Grey’s ability is totally different than Ty’s and recognizing their strengths and weaknesses, once again is a must for children.
With television, computer, and video games capturing the attention of children these days, riding provides a great outlet to explore nature. It definitely assists in hand eye coordination and is great exercise. This is coming from Robin, a former schoolteacher that plans to return to teaching when the kids get a bit older. It also provides great family time. We often pack a picnic and make a day of it.
For any questions about getting started we are fortunate to have a great group of motorcycle dealers in our area. They can assist in bike sales, service, public riding areas, etc.
